How To Save Thousands In One Year

How To Save Thousands In One Year

My parents instilled two financial lessons into me from a very young age: Never go into credit card debt and always have a rainy day fund. I took heed to their advice, and I didn’t get my first credit card until after I graduated from college and got into my career. During that same time, I started my rainy day fund. And I soon found out how hard it was to consistently deposit money into the account without removing it at a later date. After some trial and error, I finally found a way always to save money and use it only for its intended purpose. I’m going to share the two tips that helped me save thousands in one year.

How To Save Thousands In One Year

Separate Savings Account

The first step that I took was opening a different savings account that’s not linked to my checking account. How did this help me save consistently? Out of sight, out of mind. I started seeing my checking account money as my only available money. The separate account stopped me from transferring money from my savings account instead of budgeting what I had available.

Direct Deposit It

To prevent myself from using my savings or not transferring the money at all, I started depositing part of my paycheck directly into the separate savings account. This way, I didn’t have any excuse for spending the money. I looked at it in the same way that I do my health insurance payments or my 401k. My thought process is, Am I missing something that I never had in my possession?

Don’t Put It All In One Place

If I’m saving up for different things, I never put it all into one account. I’ve had times when I forgot what money I had allotted for what purpose. To prevent that, I stopped grouping all my savings. It’s simple, but it prevents a lot of headaches.

What tips do you have on how to save money?

New Year, New Me?

New Year, New Me?

Every year I succumb to making New Years resolutions. It gives me the feeling of starting my year off rights. I usually do pretty well with accomplishing my resolutions, so I continue to do them, and this year I decided to share them with you all.

My “New Year, New Me” Resolutions

1.More International Travel

I spent most of 2018 traveling around the USA. I was able to get a companion pass for my husband with Southwest, and they primarily fly domestically. 2019 is the year I want to spread my wings and explore other countries.

2. Spend less money

My goal of spending less money includes cooking more and making my morning coffee at home instead of waiting in a Starbucks line. *I’m going to miss their banana bread* I didn’t realize how much money I spent on unnecessary things last year. That will have to come to a halt this year.

3. Be more consistent with saving

I’m good at saving money, but I slack off during months where I know I will spend a lot of money. I’m going to automatically transfer a certain about of money into my savings each month without me having to do it manually. Out of sight, out of mind.

4. Become more organized

I am a self per-claimed neat freak. I like things in a particular spot, and I can’t focus unless everything is clean and tidy. But there is always room for improvement, especially when it comes to my closet and pantry.

5. Healthier Lifestyle

I know, I know. Health is usually on the top of everyone’s New Years resolution list. I did it last year with my husband, and we stuck with it until about October, and we’ve been rouge ever since. This includes everything from exercising more, eating better (Sorry Chick-fil-A), less stress, and stretching. I want it to be a lifestyle change, something that becomes second nature.
