How to Set Goals And Achieve Them

How to Set Goals And Achieve Them

At the beginning of the year I always set new goals that I want to accomplish. And before 2019 I was not able to remember, them let alone accomplish them. I have always been a goal-setter and forgetter! I would sit down and write down all my different goals and then forget them a few months later. Once I realized that me not sticking to my goals could be the reason why my life was so stagnant, I decided to change. I developed a way to constantly remind me of my goal while taking small steps to get there. Hopefully my process will show you how to set goals and achieve them in the time frame that you want it to.

How to Set Your Goals

1.Develop categories that you want to accomplish goals in.

Most of us have more than one goal that we want to accomplish. By Putting your goals into different categories allows your goals to be more specific, manageable and attainable. This year I decided to break down my goals into 5 categories:

Personal(Mentally, Physically, Socially)

Finance

Travel

Career

Blog

These are the five things that I feel like needs improvement/ things that I can always work on.

2. Answer the question, Where/How would I like to be this time next year?

Its the ultimate questions to figure out what you want to accomplish. Asking yourself this questions will lead to you being able to determine what your goals are.

Now think about that question in perspective to each category you wrote down. The answer may not pop in your head immediately, so give it time. Think deeply about where you want to be.

The answer to this question last year about my fitness goals was to be in the best shape I’ve ever been in. So I set out to be the best me when it came to fitness than I had ever been in the past. My finance goals was to have a larger security blanket. So I set my goal to save thousands of dollars last year.

Setting Goals

How to Accomplish Your Goals

1. Break down your goal

I start with my “Where do I want to be this time next year?” goals and break them down to smaller goals. Instead of focusing on one big goal I’m able to focus on a smaller goal that gets me closer to accomplishing my overall goal.

Example:

Yearly goal:

Get in the best shape of my life

Jan Goal: Go to 5 Yoga classes this month

Feb Goal: Go to the gym 5 times a week

Wed Goal: Take a healthy cooking class

2. Schedule ahead of time

At the start of each week, schedule tasks to accomplish your monthly goal. If your monthly goal is to attend 5 yoga classes, you should find and schedule those yoga classes in advance. No matter what your monthly goal is planning/scheduling in advance will get your one step closer to accomplishing your goal. Advance planning gives you one less excuse for why you can’t do something.

3. Evaluate

At the beginning of the next month, I evaluate whether or not I accomplished the previous months goals. If I didn’t accomplish it, I determine what prohibited me from accomplishing the goal I set.

4. Write everything down

Make sure your write everything down. I write down every goals both overall and monthly. I also write down what I find during my evaluations. This allows you to use everything you wrote down as a reference. No more forgetting what your goals are and what did or didn’t work. I prefer to use my bullet journal, but you can use anything you please.

Ten Habits To Have A Productive Day/Night

Ten Habits To Have A Productive Day/Night

Are you struggling to develop habits that allow your to have a productive day? I’m going to share my ten habits to have a productive day/night.

Once I graduated from college, I became the self-proclaimed queen of procrastination. All the drive that got me through both undergraduate and graduate school was now gone. I found myself making lists that never got done and pushing tasks off until the next day or the day after that. Many of my ideas, dreams, and aspirations were permanently stuck in the planning phase.

I had to finally be honest with myself about the state of my life. This was the first step to stopping my extreme procrastination. I had to ask myself, Do you want to stay in your current situation or start accomplishing all your dreams and wants? Are you tired of not completing tasks? Are you tired of being tired? The answer to every question was yes.

I then started figuring out what worked, what didn’t work, and what stopped me from doing everything I needed to do. I’m going to share with you how I developed a fail-proof productivity routine.

Ten Habits To Have A Productive Day/Night

1. What time of day do you work the best?

Are you a morning person or an night person? Do you work best after a nights rest or at night when its calmer? Once you figure this out you will work better and accomplish more. I’ve learned that I work best in the morning. I like to get up really early and start running errands and working on different projects. If I have to work early in the morning, I will pick tasks that can be accomplished in the afternoon or get up earlier than I usually do. This is because I know that I’m not a night person. Once 7 pm hits, I’m ready to whine down and get ready for bed. I’m not thinking about doing what’s on my to-do list that day.

2. Plan your week out on Sunday

On Sunday, I like to sit down and plan out everything that I need to accomplish this week. This includes everything from meals for the week to errands that I need to run. I write down everything that I need to accomplish that week on one big list. Once I have everything written down, I plug it into the appropriate days. This allows me to break down my big list into many small lists to make sure that I’m not overwhelmed. I write down all appointments and meetings as well.

3. Time Block/ Give yourself deadlines

If I’ve been having trouble focusing on particular tasks, I will block out enough time in my day to get it done. This will stop me from believing that I have all day to complete it. For an example, I will plan to go to the gym from 7am-8am and then grocery shop from 8:15- 8:45am. This will ensure that I’m home by 9am to finish all of my other tasks. And then I’ll plan to study Spanish from 10am-12pm. This allows me to stay on track and check things off of my list. I also give myself deadlines to complete certain things. I feel like I perform the best and accomplish more under pressure.

4. Organize/ clean the night before

I don’t know if it is just me, but I can’t be productive in a cluttered/messy space. If my day needs to start early, I will clean the night before, lay out everything that I need, and even make a easy breakfast/ lunch to make the start to my day easier. This allows me to focus on the tasks at hand now that everything is laid out for me.

5. Remove All Distractions

This could be placing your cellphone out of reach or getting out of the house. I know that those two things are big distractions for me. If I touch my phone I will start strolling Instagram or watching a YouTube video. If I stay in the house, I will start watching TV or finding something to organize. So I remove the possibility of those things happening by working elsewhere.

6. Find Your Ideal Work Space

Whether I’m righting a blog post, studying, or just want to start a new book, I always set up my work space accordingly. I like working in coffee shops. The background noise and small talk is not too distracting when working on small tasks. However, I prefer quiet areas for studying and reading. Its almost impossible for me to work from home due to too many distractions. Just find what works for you.

7. Inform Those Around You

I always let my husband know of my busy schedule so that he can either help or understand that I may be unavailable for a few hours. When everyone around you is asking for your assistance with their task, you can sometimes get so lost helping them that your tasks are never complete. By informing them of the importance of things you have to get done, hopefully they will respect that and only bother you when absolutely necessary.

8. Get Enough Sleep

I don’t know how many times I’ve sat down prepared to get stuff done to suddenly be hit with extreme tiredness. This is another reason I like to work in the morning because this is when I have the most energy. Either I get a good nights sleep or I take a nap before I try to accomplish anything.

9. Know when to postpone

Knowing when to move a task to a later date is extremely important. If you find yourself focusing on this one thing without getting it done and its prohibiting you from getting more important task done, it may be more beneficial to push it off until you have adequate amount of time to accomplish it.

10. Take breaks

I don’t work on one project longer than two hours consecutively. Even if I just get up to get a snack or get fresh air, any little thing counts. If gives me a fresh look once I do start again.

Ways to Improve Your Morning Routine

Ways to Improve Your Morning Routine

I never understood why my parents would get up an hour earlier to sit on the porch to read and drink coffee. I would always think about that extra hour of sleep that they could have gotten. Now I understand the importance of having a morning routine. There is nothing worse than jumping straight out of bed rushing, and it seems like the rest of my day is a never-ending rush.

Now some things are easier said than done. It’s easy to develop a morning routine, but it can be hard to stick to it. I know I’ve had my days where I made an excuse to not do my routine especially on mornings where I’m super exhausted. I do think I’ve been successful in sticking to my morning routine after I implemented a few steps to help me. Okay, I’ll stop blabbing on and on and tell you the five actions I performed to improve my morning routine and help me stick to it.

Five ways to Improve your morning routine

Prepare the night before

Whether I have work the next day or plan on working out, I always prepare the night before. I lay out everything that I will need for my early start. If its work, I will put out everything from my scrubs to my socks. I always have everything packed in my bag or within hands reach of my bag to make sure I’m not leaving anything. My coffee machine is set up so that all I have to do it press a button. I am no longer rushing to find my keys.

Wake up before everyone else

I can’t stand questions and requests being hurled at me when I first open my eyes in the morning. I like a peaceful start to my morning because I feel like it sets a precedent for the rest of my day.

Get straight out of bed.

When you wake up, don’t linger in the bed under the covers. You’re losing precious time that could be used to start your morning routine. Yes warm covers feel good but getting shit done feels good as well

Don’t look at your To-do list until your morning routine is complete.

Once you view your to-do list, you’re going to become obsessed with completing it. Your morning routine will go straight out the window, and the hustle and bustle will begin. Your to-do list isn’t going anywhere. There are 24hrs in a day, and you deserve a few for yourself.

No social-media or electronics

Don’t touch your phone or remote until your routine is complete. I’ve made it a habit to not go on social media until 11 am. By 11 am I have done my morning routine and gotten a lot of my to-do list done without any distractions.
