The Best At-Home Cold Brew

The Best At-Home Cold Brew

I’ve been on a journey to making the best coffee I can at home. I recently discovered the french press, and I’ve been using it consistently since. It took me a while to figure out how to get the perfect hot coffee. And by the time I was able to find my ideal combination, the weather in Texas started to get hotter and hotter slowly. So I began to experiment with how to make the best at-home cold brew. And I believe that I now have it down packed. I use my french press for both making hot coffee and cold brew. And it has yet to disappoint. Okay, Okay enough rambling…. let’s move on to how I make my coffee.

WHAT TO USE

French Press

The french press does all the straining for you. No more cheese cloths or separate strainers. It’s super convenient. You can purchase a 3 cup(12oz), 4 cup (17oz), 8 cup (34oz), and 12 cup(51oz) french press. It all depends on your coffee consumption, but I feel like the 34oz  french press is a perfect size.

Course ground coffee

They say the best way to make coffee is to ground your coffee fresh before using it. That seems like too much work for me. I decided to try different types of cold brew coffee that’s already ground. And I landed on the Stone Street Cold Brew Coffee. It is strong without an acidic, bitter taste. The result is a smooth drink that’s perfect for adding milk or creamer. However, I wouldn’t use this for hot coffee. It has an entirely different taste when it’s not cold brew.

HOW TO MAKE THE COLD BREW

I’ve found that I prefer the 8oz (1 cup) of coffee to 5 cups of water ratio. This ratio makes really strong coffee that can withstand adding milk or creamer. If you don’t prefer strong coffee, do an 8oz (1 cup) of coffee to 8 cups of water ratio. Also, take into account your coffee becoming diluted with ice cubes.

Strong Coffee

8 oz (1 cup) of Stone Street Course Ground Cold Brew

5 cups of filtered water

Milder Coffee

8 oz (1 cup) of Stone Street Course Ground Cold Brew

8 cups of filtered water

  1. Pour the coffee ground into the bottom of the french press
  2. Pour some of the water over the grounds making sure to wet all the grounds. Give it a slight mix if you miss some of the grounds.
  3. Pour the rest of the water over the coffee grounds into the french press.
  4. Place the lid on without pressing the handle down
  5. Brew in the refrigerator for 20 hours. Or on the counter for 14 to 18 hours

Best Products for an At-home Gel Manicure

Best Products for an At-home Gel Manicure

I’ve been doing my nails at home for a while now. One day I just decided that spending close to $100 on my nails every two weeks had to stop. So after going to the nail salon faithfully since I was 15, I decided to learn to do them myself. Since starting this DIY journey, I was able to figure out how to get my manicure to last and which products work the best for me. It all came with trial and error, but these are still the products that I use to this day. Let me know what are your best products for an at-home gel manicure as well.

Where to buy reusable non-medical grade face masks

Where to buy reusable non-medical grade face masks

The CDC recently recommended that all Americans wear face masks while out in public. I’m not much of a DIY person, so I went looking for already pre-made face masks. I decided to put together this list on where to buy reusable non-medical grade face masks to make it easier for you. I hope that everyone is staying safe and practicing social distancing so that we can all get through this together.

Reusable non-medical grade face masks

Make sure to check the estimated arrival before purchasing it! Masks are selling out everywhere, and some companies are still doing pre-sales as well.

If you want to DIY your face mask, the CDC has come out with some guidelines and also a tutorial. Also, remember that the face masks should not give you a false sense of security. You should still wash your hands, stay 6 feet apart, and limit your time outside.

Lets Talk: Having Children Is Selfish

Lets Talk: Having Children Is Selfish

“You’re missing out.” “Give that man a baby.” “You’re not getting any younger.” “Who will look after you when you get old.” “You would be an amazing mom.” “Why haven’t you had children yet? You’ve been married for a while now”. “You’ll regret it.” “What kind of woman doesn’t want to have children.” “There are women out there that can’t have children, and you’re choosing not to.”

Since getting married, I have been subjected to every last one of the questions/ statements  above. Whether it’s from people that are incredibly close to me or people waiting in line with me at target, the topic of children seems always to come up. The conversation usually starts with “Do you have children?” then leads to “What are you waiting for?” and ultimately, one of the statements above follows after. Most people would chuck this up to small talk, but I look at it as being very intrusive and insensitive.

I’ve been married now for over two years, and it’s still shocking to me how what I do with my reproductive organs are so important to people. Even though hearing all these things can be super exhausting and shocking at times, the one that gets to me the most is…

“You’re selfish.”

After hearing this so many times, I still can’t wrap my mind around how waiting to have children or having children is considered selfish. It seems like one of the most selfless things that a person could decide to do. Deciding to wait to have children or not having children at all takes a lot of strength, and knowing who you are as a person. It takes knowing that your lifestyle is not conducive for children. It takes understanding that you may not be a good parent. It takes self-awareness to know that you don’t like children, and you’re okay with being the rich aunt that comes around only on Christmas. You understand that you would rather travel the world and not wanting to settle down in one area. Understanding all these things and deciding that a child isn’t for you seems to be the polar opposite of selfishness. How could it be considered selfish to take potential children’s’ lives into account?

I decided to name this blog post, Having Children Is Selfish, because most people would be shocked if someone said that to them. But would you be just as shocked if someone said: “Not Having Children Is Selfish”? To gain a better understanding, I asked so many people why they decided to have children. 99.99% of the responses had nothing to do with the child.

I need someone to take care of me when I get old.

I want someone to love me, unconditionally.

The bible says to be fruitful and multiple.

That’s the next step after marriage, right?

It will make me become more grounded and bring stability to my life.

I was lonely.

I thought it would fix my marriage.

All of these reasons can come off very selfish. So why is it that not having children is considered the selfish act?

The entire point of making this post is to say that it’s okay not to want to have children. It’s okay to have children. It’s also okay to be undecided or indifferent about children. But it’s not okay to push your own opinion and views on others. It’s not okay to question people about their decision. Keep your opinion to yourself unless asked. Understand that you don’t know the real reason why someone is childless. Think about the above statements the same way you think about the mom with six kids giving you unsolicited parenting advice.

Also understand that marriage doesn’t equal automatic fertilization. People can love being married and also decide not to have children. Your views are not the views of everyone around you. My body my choice, right? That statement applies to everything evolving our bodies. Not just abortions and sexual assaults. Everything!

Tips For Having a Successful Fitness Journey

Tips For Having a Successful Fitness Journey

I decided to write this post about Tips For Having a Successful Fitness Journey because I’ve been on multiple unsuccessful fitness journeys. All of them went the same way. I would start to work out, become sore or extremely busy, and then I would quit. I never took it as seriously as I should have. Working out and eating healthy was always easy in the beginning, but I never knew how to get back on the horse once I feel off.

I’m the type of person that tends to fail at things that are not working towards a goal. So during the summer of 2019, my husband and I started discussing when we wanted to have children. And I concluded that I wanted to be in my best health before getting pregnant. I knew that working out could make being pregnant and giving birth easier. And it could alleviate some of my anxiety and stress about both the pregnancy and giving birth.

I’m not going to say that this journey has been smooth sailing because it’s had its ups and downs. There have been moments when I wanted to quit and weeks where I didn’t work out more than I did. However, I didn’t allow those moments to stop me from getting back on the horse and continuing on my route. I feel like this is the perfect time to share some of my tips for having a successful fitness journey + gym bag essentials.

I hope these help you as much as they have helped me.

Tips For Having a Successful Fitness Journey + Gym Bag Essentials

Stop Making Excuses

Before I started, I wrote down all the reasons that I believed that I failed in the past. I’ve used every excuse under the sun. I don’t have enough time. Not knowing where to start. I don’t have money for a gym membership. All these things weren’t good reasons why I quit or didn’t start at all. I decided to change my mindset and find solutions to the excuses I was making. When I felt as if I didn’t have enough time, so I cut down on my social media and television consumption to make time. I didn’t know where to start, so I stopped overthinking it and started small. I didn’t have enough for a gym membership, so I worked out at my apartment gym and outside. Sit down and think about whether or not this is a genuine reason why you can’t start or continue.

Know what you’re trying to accomplish and be realistic about the timeline

Why are you starting this journey? Why now? I always suggest for people to have a goal in mind. Know why you’re there. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated or extravagant. It can be as simple as wanting to feel better.

Have A Plan

Starting a fitness journey without a plan will lead to an extremely unsuccessful journey. I figured this out soon after starting. But I’m also the type of person that loves to schedule my day for maximum productivity. I have a weekly workout plan that tells me which body part to work each day. It’s also important for me to plan out which exercises I want to do for each body part as well. I switch it up frequently to not become stagnant and bored. There are a lot of fitness influencers that sell fitness plans if you’re unable to come up with your own. I would recommend doing your research on them beforehand. I found that its easier to get in and out of the gym when I have my workout planned. I’m also not wasting my time doing nothing in the gym.

Determine what time works best for you

If you work 9 to 5, it’s best to determine what time of day works best for you. Would you rather get up in the morning and go to the gym? Or would you rather get extra sleep and workout after getting off work? That’s all based on who you are as a person. I always tell people that if you’re a morning person, it’s best to work out before you start your day. You lessen the chance of becoming exhausted and not going to work out. If you prefer to work out after work, I would suggest not going home before going to the gym. Seeing your bed has a way of hypnotizing you to lay down in it and not get up. So take your gym bag with you so you can stop on your way home.

Consult a Professional

If you’ve ever read any of my other posts, you would know that I’m all about consulting a professional. I know that I don’t know anything. When I first started working out, I went onto Groupon to find fitness classes to attend. Why? Because attending fitness classes allowed me to get workout ideas and advice from professionals. It served as my foundation. Now when I go to the gym, I have some idea of what I’m doing. And when I’m feeling stagnant, I start attending different classes again.

Start Slow

Do not, I repeat, do not start off trying to do snatches or deadlift heavyweight. Start slow and work your way up to harder exercises and heavier weights. Doing too much could lead to severe injuries or getting burnt out too quickly.

Make A Candle at Paddywax Candle Bar

Make A Candle at Paddywax Candle Bar

Since moving to Dallas at the end of 2019, I’ve been trying to explore Dallas and get to know the city. And one of the first areas we explored was Deep Ellum. I immediately fell in love with the area due to them having so many amazing restaurants and cute shops. While exploring, we stumbled upon Paddywax Candle Bar while getting coffee at Merit Coffee Co next door. We walked in, and one of the employees explained the entire process on how to make a candle at Paddywax Candle Bar. We decided to come back for a date night the following week. This post is to give you a synopsis about my experience and whether or not I would recommend it.

Make A Candle at Paddywax Candle Bar

What is the Paddywax Candle Bar?

Paddywax is a candle bar that allows you to pick out a fragrance and a candle vessels, and they walk you through the steps on creating your candle for $40 per person.

The Booking Process

On the Paddywax website, you can reserve your seat at any of their 11 locations. We went to the Dallas location in Deep Ellum. It started as a pop-up, but they officially confirmed that it would become a permanent location. Once they become permanent, they will move to another location in Deep Ellum. The Dallas location is open Tuesday- Sunday.

Before Making The Candles

On the day of our reservation, we arrived 15 minutes early because they do start on time. They do allow you to BYOB, so arriving before your reservation time will enable you to set all that up. They sat us next to another couple, and it allowed for an even better experience. The couple we met had also just moved to Dallas, so it was a perfect opportunity to meet new people.

Once our reservation time arrived, our lovely instructor told us how everything would work and took us through the different fragrances and vessels they offered. I’m almost sure that they had a vessel for everyone’s taste and to match your home decor. She explained which vessels took wood, single, and triple wicks. Also, each of their vessels can be re-purposed after your candle burns out. You can also come in for a re-pour at 30% off if you want a new candle in the same vessel.

We had 10 mins to pick out the fragrance and the vessel we wanted. They had four categories of fragrances: spice, woody, sweet, and fresh. Each category has multiple different fragrances you can pick. I’m more of a fresh scent person, so I picked Verbena and Eucalyptus. My husband wanted to make something woody, so he chose Driftwood and Indigo.

Making The Candles

Once we picked the fragrances, she instructed us on how to measure out the fragrances and wax depending on which vessel we chose. One thing I enjoyed was the focus on safety. I never made candles at home due to my fear of being burned or something going wrong. So I’m glad that they made sure everything was safe.

After everything was combined and poured into our vessels, she gave us tips on proper candle care. And we had 20% off on all the items in the shop. It does take up to three hours for the candle to solidify, so we came back the following day to pick ours up. I believe that they can hold it for up to 30 days, or they can ship it to you for $8. If you don’t pick up your candle after the 30 days, they do donate them to local charities.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely! I loved our instructor, and she made it so much more enjoyable. They were extremely patient with everyone and allowed you to take photos during different parts of the process. Most people would think that $40 is a lot for one candle. However, it’s more than just buying a candle. Its the experience as a whole. I love candles, so having one that I made myself means way more to me than purchasing one at bath and body works. And to be able to do it in a safer environment made it even better. Us Being able to make our candles made for a fantastic date night and a good break from the traditional dinner and a movie. I will be back to refill my vessel as soon as it runs out!

5 Natural Hair Lessons I’ve Learned

5 Natural Hair Lessons I’ve Learned

I remember the exact day that I decided to stop getting relaxers and embrace my curls. It was during spring break of 2013, I had planned a trip to Disney World and decided that that would be my last relaxer. And I haven’t looked back since. It was the best decision that I ever made for myself. My scalp was extremely unhealthy, and my hair was lifeless. I knew that I needed to change.

I hadn’t seen what my curls looked like since I was eight and was super excited to experience them again. Knowing that it would be hard for me to get through the tiny winy Afro stage, I started my journey by wearing wigs and braids. I then started wearing my hair out and fell in love with how versatile my hair was. Now, I can’t imagine going back to relaxers. Falling in love with my curls has given me way more confidence.

Over the last seven years, I’ve learned so much about embracing my natural hair and want to share 5 natural hair lessons I’ve learned with you all!

5 Natural Hair Lessons I’ve Learned

Patience Is A Virtue

I learned very quickly that my haircare routine would be completely different than my relaxed hair. Not only would it be different, but it would take time to figure out what works and doesn’t work. I’ve tried almost every natural hair brand out there before I found products that I love. And the same products that worked in the beginning no longer work on my hair now.

Another tip is I always pick a day when I have nothing planned to do for my wash day. Having a specific wash day stops me from rushing my wash day routine. I take my time washing, detangling, deep conditioning, and styling my hair. I put on all the shows I missed during the week and went through the entire process. My wash day no longer feels like a task. I’m doing it while I’m doing something I was already going to do.

Moisture is Key

I thought that I had the worst curl pattern ever when I first started wearing my hair out. I had no curl pattern at all, and the frizz was unbelievable. I thought it was the products I was using, which was partially right. I was using the right products in the wrong way. I hadn’t figured out how to retain moisture yet. Once I figured it out, my hair changed for the better. My hair has so much bounce, and my styles last at least a week now.

The first thing I started doing was I stopped rinsing out my hair with cold water. Why seal my strands before applying all my moisturizing products? This was a game-changer. And I am focusing on deep conditioning as well. I also wash my hair once a week because water equals moisture.

Deep Conditioner is Different From Conditioner

I’ve been in a crunch where I’ve tried to use products, not for their intended purpose. At times it works, but I have had it backfire on me. I take my deep conditioners seriously. Its the one thing that makes my thick hair manageable. I find products that are specifically marketed as deep conditioners. They make my hair feel completely different, especially in combination with heat.

You’re Not Her

What works for her curls will not always work for your curls. Your curls are not her curls. There are different textures, densities, and curl patterns! Everyone thinks that they will have these loose, spiral curls when they stop getting relaxers. And when they don’t, they immediately become sad and frustrated with the curls that they have. People see Youtubers slap some gel on their hair and go and can’t figure out why it didn’t work for me. Just like they took the time out to figure out what’s best for their hair, you should as well. And while you’re on your journey, do not compare your length, curl pattern or density to your curly hair sister. It’s not fair to you.

You’re not a professional

I know my limits, and when it comes to my hair, I have a lot of them. I know when I need to consult a professional to deal with specific tasks. I tried trimming my ends myself in the first few years, and it didn’t work. I soon found a stylist that cuts my ends regularly. I also never flat iron my hair. I don’t have the energy or will to do it myself. And I know for a fact that I would give myself heat damage.

What are some lessons that you’ve learned while being on your natural hair journey?

I’ve tried a lot of spot treatments in the past, and this one is by far the best. I apply it at the very moment I feel the “a pimples coming tingle.” If I catch it too late them, I use it directly over the pimple, and its usually gone the next morning. It does contain salicylic acid and calamine.

Mario Badescu Drying Mask

I only use this mask once a week when I’m experiencing multiple breakouts. I wouldn’t recommend using this all over your face because it is powerful. And beware it does have a strong, in your face smell. If you have dehydrated skin, I would skip this product.

Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion

The buffering lotion is a spot treatment for those deeper, more stubborn breakouts. I rarely get those, but when I do, this is my go-to product. I can usually see the difference the day after I applied it, and then it’s gone the 2nd day. My husband suffers from more of the under the skin breakouts. I purchased this for him as well, and it’s been a life-changer.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash

At one point, I swore by the Trader Joe’s Teat Tree Face Wash until I realized that it contained coconut oil (Here’s why I no longer use coconut oil on my skin). I went on a search for a new facial cleanser that contained tea tree oil and came across this one by the body shop. It helps with my breakouts without drying out my skin. I no longer have to pile the moisturizer on after washing my face, which can also cause more breakouts.

These four products have yet to let me down. What are your essential Skin-Care Products For Breakouts? Or do you just allow them to go away on their own?
